Microsoft Selects New Xbox, Office, Mobile Presidents

Microsoft on Friday appointed three new division presidents to head its Office, mobile, and interactive entertainment businesses.

Don Mattrick will become president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, which includes the company’s Xbox efforts. Andy Lees will serve as president of mobile communications, and Kurt DelBene will lead Microsoft’s Office division.

Lees and Mattrick have already been heading up their respective businesses since the May resignation of Robbie Bach and J. Allard.

Bach, who was with Microsoft for 22 years and served as president of the entertainment and devices division, retired to spend more time with his family and on philanthropic efforts. Allard, senior vice president of design and development in the same division, left Microsoft after 19 years and became an advisor to CEO Steve Ballmer.

“Today’s promotions underscore the strength of Microsoft’s collective leadership team and set us up well to execute against a powerful lineup of products this fall,” Ballmer said in a statement. “Not only is the team ready to capitalize on major momentum with our existing products like Office, SharePoint and ‘Halo: Reach,’ but they are simultaneously bringing entirely new experiences to market with Windows Phone 7 and Kinect for Xbox 360.”

Lees has been with Microsoft for 20 years and has led the mobile communications business since February 2008, where he worked on the upcoming release of Windows Phone 7. Mattrick joined Microsoft in 2007; he will continue to oversee several businesses, including Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, Kinect, Zune Music and Video, and Mediaroom, as well as the PC and mobile interactive entertainment divisions that he took on after Bach’s departure.

DelBene, meanwhile, has been with the company for 18 years and most recently led the engineering and development teams for the Microsoft Business Division. He replaces Stephen Elop, who left the position last month to become chief executive at Nokia.
